DIY | MINION BABY OUTFIT

Minions, assemble!

Yesterday I created this minion baby outfit for a friend's baby shower and with Halloween just around the corner, I thought I'd share this relatively simple and absolutely adorable DIY project. Enjoy!

Materials:
  • yellow onesie
  • yellow beanie
  • gray, white and black felt
  • black elastic
  • thin denim fabric
  • two black buttons
  • golden brown thread
  • black thread
  • black fabric marker or fabric paint
  • Liquid Stitch
  • Fray Check

Onesie:

1. To create a pattern for the overalls, lay out the onesie over a piece of newspaper or other scratch paper and trace the outline of the sides. Draw in your desired overalls shape. For the back of the overalls, draw in a rectangle fitted to the overalls below the "arm hole".

2.  Add a 3/8 inch to the overall outline to account for the seams.  Cut out pattern, pin to the denim fabric and cut.

3. Fold the edges of the overalls 1/4 inch and press with an iron.

4. Using a small stitch, sew along the edge of the overalls with the golden brown thread, making sure to stay within the 1/4 inch seam allowance.
5.  With right sides together, line up the front and back of the overalls and sew together at the side seams.  Turn inside out and slip over the onesie.

6. Use Liquid Stitch to glue the overalls into place leaving the back top edge free.  Be sure to place a piece of cardboard or some newspaper inside the onesie so that the glue does not bleed through.  I only glued the edges of the overalls into place.  Liquid Stitch is a great alternative to sewing because not only is it much easier than sewing, but it is machine washable!

7. Add a pocket of the desired size using the same iron press and stitch technique as the overalls.  Use Liquid Stitch to glue along the bottom three sides so that the pocket is functional.

8. For functional overall straps, measure the length needed for the back and front pieces, leaving an extra 3/4 inch for the front to account for the button and 3/8 for the back seam allowance.  I decided to make the overall straps functional because the denim fabric does not have any stretch.

9.  With right sides facing together, sew together the overall straps along the long edges.  Turn the tube right side out and iron flat.  Finish the front end of the straps by tucking in the edges and sewing in place.

10. Either sew or Liquid Stitch the overall straps onto the back.  Use Liquid Stitch to secure the straps at the shoulders.

11.  Sew on two black buttons and mark the position of the button hole on the overall straps with chalk.
12.  Button holes...my least favorite part of the outfit. Cut the button hole and use Fray Check to keep the ends of the fabric from fraying. Make small stitches along the edge of the button hole with the golden brown thread.

13.  Using a black fabric marker or fabric paint, create the minion logo.  I switched out the G for an E (baby Emmett)

Beanie:

1. With the gray felt, cut out a large circle for the goggles.  Cut out a slightly smaller white circle for the eye and a small black circle for the iris.  Either stitch by hand or use Liquid Stitch to secure into place.

2.  Loosely measure the length of elastic to go around the circumference of the hat.  I used elastic instead of felt so that the hat would still have some stretch.

3. Stitch the ends of the elastic into place on either side of the eye, on each side and the back middle.

4.  Sew on some felt strips for hair and your minion outfit is complete!
